Lecture: Bessie’s Tale by Rosemary Griggs
June 4, 2026 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Bessie the Serving Maid invites you to travel back to Devon in the sixteenth century. Rosemary Griggs, in full costume of the time, explores the lives of working people in Tudor Devon. Historian, speaker, and author Griggs has spent years exploring Devon’s 16th-century past, especially the Champernowne family. This research forms the basis of her popular Daughters of Devon novels. Griggs makes authentically constructed Tudor outfits, which she wears to bring history to life in a unique blend of theatre, history and re-enactment for museums and community groups all over the west of England.
This event is part of the Devon Rural Archive’s 2026 lecture series. Please follow the signs to the Cafe and Archive upon arrival.
