Shilstone House Tour

The owner, Lucy Fenwick, will take you around the house, including some of the private rooms, and will explain its history. Shilstone has been virtually entirely rebuilt, by local craftsmen who have worked on the site since it was purchased in 1997. The corner stone was laid in 2000, and the outside building work completed in 2010. The interior was finally completed in 2019 with the remarkable oak-panelled drawing room with its fine 17th century style plaster ceiling. The stone used to build Shilstone was extracted from an ancient quarry on the land, where the original stone would surely have come from. Wherever possible local materials were used, including Devon oak for the floors, and drawing room panelling, and lovely old Delabole slates for the roof which came from Freedom Fields Hospital in Plymouth following its demolition. Lucy will explain this work as you pass from room to room and explore what is largely a completely new house. She will be delighted to answer any questions you may have as you go around. As a new house, it has the benefits of being contemporary, but also classical, and it is hard to comprehend that it is, in effect, brand new.
